A big walk mower's air filter has two defenses: the foam first, the paper element second. The XT149 air filter comes as two pieces. The paper element: pleated yellowish white media in a red rubber frame, with a white wire guard on one side. The foam prefilter: a black pad that rides ahead of the paper. The foam stops the big stuff, clippings and coarse dust; the paper catches the fine, and together that is why a walk mower can work in heavy dust without the engine suffering.
Can you keep only one of the two? Not really. Without the foam, all the coarse dust lands on the paper, the pleats crush faster and the media clogs sooner. Without the paper, the foam alone cannot stop the fine dust, and grit reaches the cylinder. Each layer has a job, and the foam is the line in the front, washable and the first to go.
How often should you look? The foam prefilter comes out, washes in water, dries, and goes back in, and that is part of normal care. The paper element is a consumable: when the yellowish white media turns grey and dark, or the pleats flatten, replace it. The wire guard side faces the foam when fitted, so match the old part's position instead of reversing it.
When you change the paper, change a dirty foam with it. Walk mowers work in the field, and the filter takes more dust than a cutter does. Keep a fresh element and a clean pad on the shelf, change them when they are dirty, and the engine stays smooth.
