The engine itself cannot start from a stationary state. It requires an external force to complete the initial cycle of "inhalation - compression - ignition - exhaust" first. The starter is the device that provides this initial power.

Two main types and their respective functions:

The common starters used on the 188F engine mainly consist of two types:

1. Thrust Starter

* Working Principle: By quickly pulling the starting rope with your hands, the starting disc rotates, driving the engine crankshaft to turn.

* Action Process: You pull the rope → The pawl mechanism engages → The rotational force is transmitted to the crankshaft → The piston moves to create compression → The ignition system generates a spark at the correct moment → The mixture is ignited, and the engine starts. After starting, the pawl automatically disengages to prevent the engine from dragging the starter.

* Advantages: Simple structure, reliable, no need for batteries.

* Disadvantages: Requires some physical strength, more strenuous for large-power engines.

2. Electric Starter

* Working Principle: Powered by the battery, by pressing the start switch, it controls the rotation of the starting motor. The gear at the front end of the motor (drive gear) extends and engages with the gear ring on the flywheel of the engine, thereby driving the flywheel and the crankshaft to rotate at high speed.

* Operating Process: Press the key or button → The start relay is energized → The starting motor rotates at high speed and extends the gear → The gear engages with the gear ring on the flywheel → The crankshaft rotates → The engine ignites and starts → After releasing the key, the gear automatically retracts and detaches from the engagement.

* Advantages: Easy and convenient to operate, especially suitable for frequent starts or high-power models.

* Disadvantages: Complex structure, high cost, and dependent on the state of the battery.

Overall effect and significance:

1. Reliability startup: Ensure that it can provide sufficient power to overcome the internal resistance of the engine (such as cylinder compression force, component friction, etc.) in various environmental temperatures (especially at low temperatures), achieving reliable startup.

2. Safety: Usually, there are safety protection mechanisms designed. For example, the one-way clutch of the recoil starter (to prevent recoil from hitting the hand), the start protection of the electric starter (some equipment requires it to be started electrically in neutral gear), to prevent accidents caused by improper operation.
