The little slot in the middle of a fuel cap looks insignificant, but it is how the tank breathes. Run the engine and the fuel warms, the air expands, and if it cannot escape, the pressure inside the tank builds. The cap works loose, the seal flattens, and seepage starts there. The ST020 fuel cap is a vented type. Its orange center plate carries a rectangular slot, so air moves in and out as the tank pressure changes, the tank stays balanced, and the slot is held shut by the cap body so fumes do not escape.
Every piece on the cap has a job. The black plastic shell is ribbed so a finger can twist it. The orange center plate vents the tank. An orange sealing ring sits inside. And a T shaped wire tether is welded on the outside. The wire is not decoration: on a chainsaw the tank sits high on the body, so while you refuel the tether hooks over the tank rim, the cap stays with the machine instead of falling or rolling away, and after a quarter turn it folds back into its slot.
The ST020 fuel cap fits the tank of older 020 series chainsaws. The 021, 023, 024, 025 and 026 from the same generation share the same tank seat, and listings commonly group them with the 020, but old machines wear their seats differently, so measure the old cap and the tank seat, or send a photo before ordering.
When should the cap be replaced? The sealing ring hardens with age, and fuel seeping around the tank seat points at it first. If the vent slot is packed with oil grime, the tank cannot breathe, the cap pulls stiff, and the seepage and the stiff cap are usually the same fault, so pick the slot clear. A cracked grip ring or a bent wire that no longer hooks means the whole cap goes, and a fresh one puts the seal and the vent right at the same time.
