The only filter you can wash and reuse in a generator is this one piece of foam. The EB2000i sponge air filter is exactly that kind.
Why can it be washed? A paper air filter is replaced once it clogs. A foam air filter is washed. The foam's cells are open, dust sits in them rather than growing into them, so a rinse under clean water, a dry, and it works again. That is why it is called a reusable filter, the only one in a generator that works this way.
Why two pieces, one large and one small? The filter does not sit on a flat plate. The main intake channel takes one large, shaped piece with a locating hole in the center, and the side needs one small rectangular foam piece. The two cover different sections of the intake, and only together do they seal the air path. Drop one, and that section is unfiltered.
Where does it go? Inside the air cleaner box, so intake passes through the foam before entering the machine. The foam holds dust, debris and insects out, and the machine breathes clean air. When it clogs, intake chokes, and the machine burns more fuel and loses power, which makes it the first filter you should look at.
How to wash it? Take the foam out, rinse it under clean water, and skip harsh detergents. Squeeze it dry, let it air dry, and keep it out of direct sun. To reinstall, fit it the same way as before, the large piece's center hole on the box's locating post, the small piece into the side slot. Then start the machine and check that the intake is smooth.
When to replace it? When the foam hardens, crumbles, will not wash clean, or tears. Foam ages, and a clean rinse does not make it last forever.
