The red cover goes on without a single screw. The F016F04841 is the spool cover for AFS 23-37 series brush cutter heads. A red ABS shell, round, with a snap rim around the edge, a raised tab on one side, two locating posts inside and a recessed ring at the center. To fit it, line the two posts up with the holes in the base, press down along the snap direction, and it clicks home. No tools, no screws.
What does the cover protect? The cutting head lives in the grass all day, and clippings, water and small stones hit it first. The cover keeps the trimmer line and the feed mechanism inside, so the line does not get smashed by stones and the base does not clog and wear. Once the cover is gone, the line breaks faster and the base wears faster, and both come from the same fault.
The red cover and the base are a pair. An AFS 23-37 head usually has two pieces: this red cover, the F016F04841, and a black base, the F016F04839. The two hold the spool between them. Suppliers commonly sell the cover and the base separately, so if only the cover is broken, replace the cover; only when the base is cracked too do both go.
When should the cover be replaced? Snaps broken, the cover will not close and flies off under load; the side tab cracked, the cover is hard to lift off; the posts worn and the cover wobbling, all of it points at the cover, and the whole piece goes. The top of the cover carries a few small arrow marks, so before pressing a new one on, face it the same way as the old cover, because the wrong direction will not seat.
