The D8TJC marking on the shell is the most useful clue when buying a spark plug. D8TJC is a three electrode spark plug used on many chainsaws and brush cutters. Three ground electrodes surround the center electrode, so even when the engine starts to foul and the idle feels rough, the spark can still form at more than one point and the engine is less likely to stall at a turn of the throttle.
How do you know when to replace it? Pull the old plug and look at two places. Is there white carbon on the ceramic insulator, is the tip electrode visibly eroded, or has the gap widened so the spark is weak? Any one of those says it is time, and you do not have to wait until the engine will not start.
Two things before installation. The thread is the M14x1.25 size common on chainsaws and brush cutters, so screw it in by hand first and finish gently with the wrench instead of forcing it. Seat the high tension boot firmly on the terminal, because a loose boot can arc. If you do not have the old plug to compare, match the number, thread and overall shape, and remember that similar numbers are not always interchangeable, so check before ordering.
A spark plug is a cheap part that is easy to forget. Chainsaw work, trimming and greening all depend on it, and one kept on the shelf turns a bad morning into a five minute fix.
