Pulling the starter cord is the first thing you do with a chainsaw every time, and the last thing you feel. The 3800 pull starter is a complete assembly for 38cc gasoline chainsaws: an orange cover, a black T handle, the inner roll and return spring inside, and a square service door at the rear. The cord, the roll, the spring and the cover all live in this one unit, so when the pull feels heavy, the starter is aging.
Where is the problem? Three things are common. A heavy pull, when the return spring has tired or the cord has tangled, gets worse with use. A cord that does not rewind when you let go, when the pawl is worn or the roll ratchet stops engaging. A cord that pops back out of the housing, when the line is too short or the handle eye has stretched. A rattle inside the housing means the pawl and ratchet are badly worn.
What to do? For small faults, take the cover off and look: is the cord frayed or tangled, has the spring come off, and wipe the housing dry. If the cord is broken, the spring is off, or the pawl is worn out, replacing the whole assembly is the surest fix. The 3800 pull starter comes as one unit with cord, roll, spring and cover, so it installs the way the old one came out and starts at once.
Do not wait until the engine will not start to think about the starter. A chainsaw works in the field, and a bad stop is the whole day. On a machine that has run a while, keep a spare set on the shelf and change it when the pull feels wrong.
